![]() About UsHistoryIn 1926, Mr. Herman Spector owned a tailor shop in Ft Benning, Georgia and as World War II neared, he ventured into dry cleaning and laundry as well. Business prospered and in 1947, Mr. Spector retired and his daughter Janis and her husband, Murray Robbins moved to Columbus from New York to take over the business. The business was 100% focused on Ft. Benning and as the Korean conflict intensified, business prospered. In the early 1950's, Mr. Robbins purchased land and built a production facility to handle the overflow from Ft. Benning. He called it Sun Ray Cleaners, and it is still in operation as the Sun Ray cleaners main plant. In 1974 with the buyout of Scientific Cleaners, Mr. Robbins moved into the civilian market in Columbus. In 1975, Patricia Robbins, the daughter of Murray and Janis Robbins, and her husband Jack Wilensky moved from New York to Columbus and joined the business. From 1975 to 1982 the company took over seven competitors, moved the plant from Ft Benning to a 10,000 sq ft facility off post, started a wholesale suede and leather operation and diversified into tuxedo sales and rentals with the purchase of Henri's Formal Wear.
